Thøkk's lament

No, no, no, old tanned Thøkk won't cry,
for the lovely Lord of Youth,
for to her it won't do any good.
He has what tanned Thøkk has no more,
and soon old Thøkk will close the final door.
Would the mighty lord ever restore
troubled Thøkk to what she was before?
Thøkk the thoothless thinks not
for it isn't his to give the  Norns lamented lore.

No, no, no, old Thøkk won’t cry
for the Lord of Light,
for her empty eyes only behold the vast starless night.
The shadows of lustless life are all she sees in her final years.
Lightless she faces her final fears.

No,no, no Thøkk won't weep
for one God less in the silken sky.
With only emptyness ahead,
why tears for the whiteskin should she shed?
Her face is dark with years,
yawning and cloven by ancient salty tears.
Not for him will her rivers now swell
nor fill the canyons on her front with the despair of Hell.

No,no,no Thøkk won't weep untrue rotten rains,
for never forgotten will He be, the Golden Lord.
But who will weep for Thøkk, when her night has come
remember her will none,
unless now I refusee this bid to weep.
Only then immortality will gain,
my ever cursed unholly name.
And thus through everlasting hate,
eterrnal life will be my fate

Loki is being kidnapped by the giant Thjazi. The runic text is in danish and translates as "NOOO Thjazi do not fly through the trees.... Since Loki couldn't let go, and Thjazi wanted  him to bring him the apples of Idun, he had every reason to tormend Loki as much as possible. Thus I imagined this scene....

The creation of the universe and the wold in Norse mythology is a quite colorfull and "bloody", even nasty story, involving decapitations, floods of blood, magots turning into dwarfs, hermapfrodite porn etc. I invite all of you to read throug it.... :-)
The folowing picture is somewhat a wrap up of all the events described in the creation myth. I didn't bother about the space-time continuum. I just wanted to prop as many of the aspects of the myth to appear in one picture.

the mara is an evil (mostly female) spirit that visits her victims at night. She sits upon them and extracts their life forced. Hence the word nightmare, "nachtmerrie". A person being plagued by such a mara was said to be marerit or ridden by the mare.

Dea Sandraudiga

 

Sandraudiga is Germanic Goddess only known from a single Latin inscription on an altar found in Zundert (The Netherlands). Her name means She who colours the sand red.

Several interpretations to this name have been proposed.
Some claim she must be a battle Goddess, colouring the sand in blood. Others say it has to do with fertility. The fertile grounds in the Zundert Aerea are quite reddish. In order to support their theory they refer to the horn of plenty carved out on her altar. And a last interpretation connects her to the production of iron, the red sands are quite rich in iron and proof of early iron reduction has been found in the neighbourhood of her altar.
So I though, why choose, she might just as well have been Goddess of all these elements. Fertility godesses are often battle godesses as well. And moving from swords to iron isn't hard either.

Baldr's begrafenis

Thor misdraagde zich een beetje op Baldr's begrafenis. Ik dahct dat het wel grappig was de dwerg af te beelden als een tuinkabouter.

Fimbul

De langste winter ooit, de fimbulwinter. Op de achtergrond bereiden Goden en Reuzen zich voor op de eindstrijd. Op de voorgrond leidt de mens, kou honger, misschien een verloren geliefde die omkwam in de strijd tussen broeders en clanleden. De wereld wordt overgeleverd aan de dieren van het noorden, zoals de gestilleerde walrus.

Freja weeps

The text is in dutch, writen in Dalrunes " toen hij haar verliet huilde ze tranen van amber en goud" or "When he left her, she wept tears of amber and gold".
The intreaging thing is that after having read the saga's and the comments on the saga's I am stil uncertain whe HE is.
Is is Odd or Odin? At least Peter Madsen seems to believe Odd and Odin are one, and as such he is representatif of an important group of saga connaisseurs. On the other hand, in many 19th centuray commentaries we find the opposite view. Odd is regarded as a deity on its own... .
I have no preference for either of these visions, thus I choose the neutral HE.

Why Dalrunes? first of all I find them quite attractive, having survived as a genuine writing system well into the 20th century.
I once read that during the 30 year war, one of the generals used Dalrunes to pass on orders to his officers.
furthermore I find them quite elegant. Although in daily life I prefer to use the original germanic runes (as they are the easiest to use in my mother tongue Dutch), I often integrate the specific dallrunes for scandinavian letters when writing in Danish. Dalrunes fill in the empty spaces older runes cannot fill in since they were no more in use when the soundsystem of Scandinavian langues changed.
