the mara is an evil (mostly female) spirit that visits her victims at night. She sits upon them and extracts their life forced. Hence the word nightmare, "nachtmerrie". A person being plagued by such a mara was said to be marerit or ridden by the mare.

A dark elf mage performing dark Seidr magic, The runes are of a set I developped myself, because i didn't want to use real runes for the language and words used in the painting. Intruiged? Just know that the runes are a combination of elder futhark and roman capital letters.
